Crews are making solid progress at the Big Easy Recreation Area and Trailhead in anticipation of an early fall grand opening.
Get a glimpse behind the scenes of the recent US Hwy 6 closure that brought us one step closer to the grand opening of the Big Easy Trailhead in Clear Creek Canyon Park.
Jeffco Open Space, along with our contractor Muller Engineering Co Inc, were humbled to receive an Honor Award for the Peaks to Plains Trail, from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The national awards ceremony took place on April 25, 2017 in Washington D.C. and was hosted by Saturday Night Live alum Kevin Nealon.
Also this April, Jeffco Open Space was thrilled to be one of eight recipients of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) 2017 Metro Vision Awards for The Peaks to Plains Trail. The award is for the three-mile segment of the Peaks to Plains Trail that was opened last year, and DRCOG focused on the community partnerships involved and the future connections the trail will make in the state. Cannonball Flats parking lot in Clear Creek Canyon Park will be getting a face lift Thursday, 4/27 through Saturday, 4/29. Weather dependent, the entire parking lot will be closed for crews and operations. Please use Mayhem Gulch or Oxbow Parking lots to access Peaks to Plains Trail. Thanks for your patience!
Please be aware that US Hwy 6 will be closed between Junctions 58–119 on May 3, 8 p.m. – May 4, 6 p.m.
Crews will be re-aligning and paving a section of US Hwy 6 near mile marker 262.5 to accommodate a new 50 car parking lot for The Big Easy trailhead access. In addition, the delivery and installation of the fourth Peaks to Plains bridge will be happening simultaneously in the same area. Revisit the first bridge installation.
The development of the Big Easy Recreation Area will include a permanent restroom, among other new amenities like picnic areas and a creek-side boardwalk.
Thanks for the patience!
Closure alert on Peaks to Plains Trail in Clear Creek Canyon Park for Monday April 24 and potentially into Tuesday. Due to rising water levels, trail and wall repairs are being made in the Clear Creek County section starting near intersection of 119 & US Hwy 6 to approximately 1/4 mile west.
Please plan accordingly and be mindful of crews as they work.
The development of the Big Easy Recreation Area will include a permanent restroom, among other new amenities like picnic areas, and a creek-side boardwalk. A permanent restroom has long been needed here and will be a great amenity when the area opens later this year.
You might have noticed the recent warm weather has brought about a flurry of construction activity along US Hwy 6 in Clear Creek Canyon. This is all part of another 3/4 mile stretch of the Peaks to Plains Trail and the development of the Big Easy Recreation Area which will include parking for over 50 cars, a permanent restroom, multiple river access points, picnic areas and a new bridge across the creek. To accommodate the new parking lot, and allow for safer creek-side access, US Hwy 6 needs to be moved to the north. With a planned opening date of early September, the crews are working diligently to physically move the highway to the north of its current location near mile marker 262.5.
Please be patient with on-going lane closures and delays as a result of this work (they will continue off an on for the next month or so). Rest assured the new amenities and recreation area will be worth the wait and loved by visitors for years to come.
Lots of action at the Big Easy helping us meet our goal of opening early fall…
